My self-imposed assignment for the next few months is to travel and learn and share stories about the great work taking place in online journalism around the world.
As promised, here are some details on where I’ll be and what I’ll be up to. All of this is subject to change, of course, and I’ll keep this page updated as I go.
- Brussels: Jan. 19-31
- Jan. 26: European blogging competition launch event — Here’s my take on the discussion of whether blogging is journalism.
- Preston, U.K.: Feb. 1-6
- Feb. 2-6: Journalism Leaders Programme — I spoke about newsroom integration and the use of interactive technology in news presentation.

- Perugia, Italy: April 1-5
- April 2: International Journalism Festival — I participated in a panel discussion on networked journalism and the fate of the news media.
- April 2: Online News Association Italy meetup — Here’s video of my presentation on alternative story forms.
- Austin, Texas: April 17-18
- Attended the International Symposium on Online Journalism.
- Philadelphia: April 25 (tentative)
- Led a discussion on information overload at BarCamp NewsInnovation. Notes here.
- Japan: June 9-22
- Met with researchers working for NTT DoCoMo to talk about mobile content delivery in Japan. Write-up here.
- Germany: July 27-Oct. 2
- I did a two-month stint at Spiegel Online‘s international edition in Berlin through the Arthur Burns Fellowship program.
- San Francisco: Oct. 1-5
- Attended the 2009 Online News Association conference and caught up with friends in the Bay Area.
- Vancouver, Canada: Oct. 6-9
- Looked for a place to live while I’m teaching at the University of British Columbia next year.
- Seattle: Oct. 10-11
- Attended InfoCamp and led a session on data as journalism.
- Brussels: Oct. 24-Nov. 20
- Getting some writing and consulting work done, finally!
