About me

I help journalists — and the organizations that support their work — thrive in a changing digital landscape. My posts here are now few and far between, but I used to muse on journalism, the internet and digital culture on this site.

Interests

Besides the topics above, here are some things I’m interested in and have occasionally written about:

  • Business models for journalism in the digital age
  • Digital product management in the news industry
  • Digital storytelling and data visualization
  • Social effects of information technology, globalization and urbanization
  • Languages, especially German, French, Spanish and Dutch (of which I speak German and feebly attempt to speak the other three)
  • New Orleans, my hometown and one of my favorite places in the world

Affiliations

Opinions expressed here are my own and not those of any of the organizations and institutions I’m connected with. In the interest of transparency, here’s the list of my current and recent affiliations:

Speaking

I’ve had the privilege of speaking about topics I’m passionate about at gatherings on three continents over the years. Here’s a partial list:

  1. Very nice. Will your entries eventually include related post headlines?

Also, though it might spoil the minimalism of the design, I’m half-expecting one of your signature tag clouds and a map somewhere.

Looking forward to reading and watching as your site evolves!

  2. Thanks! Yes, I plan to add a related posts feature as soon as there are some posts to relate. 🙂 Also on the list: Delicious links, save/share tools, Flickr integration, geotagging and other stuff. And yes, clouds and maps.

  3. This is a smart-looking blog that makes me realize that I am due for a redesign at mine.

  4. Hi Eric,

I’m the Director of Information and Semantics Management at the Tribune Company, and I just wanted to let you know that the LATimes shared with me information you regarding analysis of topics, page rank, and so on that you provided them earlier this year.

I think your findings are very interesting, and I’m sorry that, being at the enterprise level, I wasn’t aware of this analysis engagement in order, perhaps, to provide you with additional information, context, and background regarding how the LATimes is leveraging the Tribune Company’s automated indexing resources as well as comprehensive information regarding the company’s larger enterprise efforts in this area.

I will be sharing your analysis with corporate management here at the Tribune Company as I think it’s insightful and will certainly help us as we move forward in our on-going efforts to improve our processes not just for the one LATimes market but all our news and broadcast sites across the U.S. In the meantime, thank you and all the best.

    Regards,

    Keith DeWeese

  5. Thanks for writing, Keith. Glad it was useful.
